Polyurethane (PUR and PU for short) is a polymer composed of organic units connected by amino acid esters. Although most polyurethane is a thermosetting polymer that does not melt when heated, polyurethane also has thermoplastic properties.
Polyurethane polymers are traditionally and most commonly polymerized through the reaction of dimers or trimeric isocyanates with polyols. Because polyurethane contains two monomers that alternate in polymerization one after another, they are classified as alternating copolymers. Isocyanates and polyols used for preparing polyurethane contain two or more functional groups per molecule on average.
Polyurethane is used to manufacture high elastic foam seats, hard foam heat insulation panels, microporous foam seals and gaskets, durable elastic wheels and tires (such as roller coasters, escalators, shopping carts, elevators and skateboard wheels), automobile suspension bushings, electrical potting compounds, high-performance adhesives, surface coatings and surface sealants, synthetic fibers (such as spandex), carpet linings, hard plastic parts (such as electronic instruments) Condoms and hoses.
